Stavros' is a meat-and-three, which in Montgomery means you walk the line with a tray, point at what looks good, and it's on your plate ninety seconds later. Nothing sits. Vegetables are cut every morning — decades before anybody thought to call it farm-to-table.

Two Families, One Recipe Box
Ted Sarris left Tsitalia, Greece in 1955 and landed in Montgomery with a cousin's apron and no English. By 1960 he owned the Old Hickory. On June 11, 1975, he opened the doors at 410 Sayre Street.
When he retired in 2000, he sold to Niko and Daphne Karas — an aerospace engineer from Thessaloniki and a psychologist born in the Bahamas — on one condition. Keep the name. Keep the recipes.
